Kuti emphasized that the responsibility for fostering change lies with Nigeria’s youth. He pointed out that significant cultural landmarks, such as the Fela Shrine, were established in Africa, underlining the importance of local contributions, even from those with dual citizenship.

He cited his son, Made Kuti, as an example of someone who, despite being a British citizen, remains committed to Nigeria.

“People ask me, ‘Are you not going to japa?’ Japa to where? Let me tell you about Europe; do you think they ran away? No, they fought; Europe endured hundreds of civil wars. America faced one of the worst civil wars in history, which is why Americans still carry guns today,” Kuti explained.

He urged Nigerians to recognize the necessity of staying and striving for a country they love. “We must understand that we need to stay here and fight for a better nation. We didn’t build the Fela Shrine in Los Angeles or London; we built it in Africa. Wake up, because this country depends on you,” he asserted.

Kuti also highlighted his son’s dedication to Nigeria, stating, “Made is a British citizen, but where is he? He’s in Nigeria because he has no other place. What does he want to do there? If they call him for work, he’ll go to play and then come back. Who will take over the shrine? I want to retire.”
