FG Pledges Support for Youth as Police Reforms and New Policies Unveiled

Powerful statement at the Nigeria Police Force Youth Summit, held in Abuja to mark the 2024 United Nations International Youth Day, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, Minister of Police Affairs, reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to alleviating the immediate impacts of its policies while striving for a brighter future for Nigerian youth.
Addressing the summit at the Nigeria Police Resource Centre in Jabi, Abuja, which was themed “Enhancing the Nigeria Youth’s Value for National Security Intelligence,” Gaidam, represented by Permanent Secretary Mr. James Sule, highlighted several government initiatives designed to empower young Nigerians.
Among the key policies mentioned were the implementation of the student loan scheme program, aimed at providing equal access to higher education for all Nigerian youths. The Minister also pointed to the approval of a new minimum wage, the suspension of tariffs on essential food and drugs, and support for local refining of petroleum products through sales to indigenous refineries in Naira as significant steps towards improving the lives of Nigerians.
Gaidam outlined the ongoing Police Reforms initiative, which seeks to create an integrated policing model focused on supporting rural communities and enhancing food production. He emphasized the initiative’s role in tapping into Nigeria’s solid minerals potential to drive sustainable development and economic growth.
“On this year’s UN International Youth Day, I assure you that the Ministry of Police Affairs is dedicated to collaborating with the Ministry of Youths to foster an environment where your dreams and aspirations can be realized,” Gaidam said. He encouraged continued engagement in constructive dialogue with the Government to prevent actions that could destabilize the nation.
Highlighting the importance of youth involvement in national security, Gaidam noted, “Youth engagement in security matters is crucial. Young Nigerians bring innovative ideas and energy needed to tackle national challenges. Today, we must focus on channeling this energy into positive outcomes.”
Gaidam praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for its unwavering commitment to youth development, entrepreneurship, and creating opportunities. He reiterated the government’s recognition of the peaceful protesters’ message, though he condemned the violence and destruction caused by a small faction that disrupted the peaceful nature of the protests.
“The recent surge in civic engagement among our youth is commendable, but it is crucial to approach our grievances constructively,” Gaidam said. He urged for a culture of dialogue over destruction, aligning with the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which envisions a Nigeria where youth are leaders in security and development.
In closing, Gaidam expressed gratitude to the youth for responding to President Tinubu’s call for dialogue and suspended protests. He extended his condolences to the families of the youths who lost their lives during the protests and offered his prayers for their healing during this difficult time.
The event highlighted the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to address the concerns of Nigerian youth and its commitment to fostering a secure and prosperous future for the nation.
