This initiative, launched under the third phase of the Nigerian Energy Support Programme (NESP), aims to boost investments in renewable energy, energy efficiency, and rural electrification.
According to the EU, the third phase will enable 154,000 people to gain electricity access, connect 30,000 others to clean cooking gas, and generate eight megawatts of electricity.
The NESP, which began in 2013, is a technical assistance programme jointly funded by the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in partnership with Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Power.
At the NESP III launch and steering committee meeting, Inga Stefanowicz, Head of Section for Green and Digital Economy at the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, emphasized the collective responsibility of all stakeholders in achieving a cleaner energy future.
She noted that the EU is committed to supporting Nigeria’s energy security and sustainable energy goals by increasing renewable sources in the energy mix. Stefanowicz added that the EU is pleased to provide additional funding for the third phase to support frameworks and innovative models, fostering renewable energy investment, and ensuring reliable power for beneficiaries.
