FG Suspends Nigeria Air, Announce Date To Close Lagos Airport Old Terminal

Starting from October 1, 2023, all international airlines that operate from Lagos’ Murtala Mohammed International Airport will be required to relocate from the older international terminal building.

This move is necessitated by the closure of the old terminal building for repair purposes.

This announcement was made by Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation, during his visit to the Lagos airport to inspect its aviation facilities on a Thursday.

During this visit, Minister Keyamo also conveyed his commitment to implementing reforms within the aviation sector. He revealed that initiatives initiated by his predecessor, Hadi Sirika, such as the proposed Nigeria Air project, have been temporarily suspended to facilitate a comprehensive review of contracts. The primary goal of this pause is to ensure proper contract auditing.

The Minister further emphasized his dedication to enhancing aviation safety. As part of his inspection, he even took a bus tour to assess the airport’s perimeter fence.

Back in June, Girma Wake, a veteran aviator, resigned from his position as Chairman of Ethiopian Airlines amidst a controversial backdrop involving the establishment of Nigeria’s national carrier, Nigeria Air.

Earlier than that, Capt Dapo Olumide, the Interim Managing Director of Nigeria Air, clarified that the aircraft used to introduce the nation’s national carrier was legally chartered from Ethiopian Airlines. He confirmed that the aircraft was returned to Ethiopian Airlines after its unveiling on the final day of the Muhammadu Buhari administration in May.

Both the Nigerian Senate and the House of Representatives Committees on Aviation had criticized the launch of Nigeria Air, branding it as a fraudulent endeavor.
