JUST IN Tension In Niger As Military Regime Orders Expulsion Of French Ambassador

Niger’s newly established military leaders have taken actions that escalate tensions with their traditional ally, France.

The military rulers have revoked the diplomatic immunity of France’s ambassador and issued orders for his expulsion.

This decision comes in the wake of a letter dated Tuesday, which informed the French foreign ministry that the ambassador and his family members no longer hold diplomatic privileges and their visas have been canceled.

The local police have been directed to carry out the expulsion.

These moves are a direct result of the coup that occurred in Niger on July 26, leading to the ousting of President Mohamed Bazoum, a close ally of France. The relationship between Niger and France deteriorated as France chose to stand by Bazoum and did not acknowledge Niger’s new ruling authorities.

The situation intensified when the authorities granted the French envoy 48 hours to leave the country. However, France refused to comply, asserting that the demand lacked legal authority. French President Emmanuel Macron even commended the envoy for his commitment to his post.

Adding to the tension, the French military spokesman warned that French forces were prepared to respond to any escalation that could jeopardize French diplomatic and military facilities in Niger. France has a significant military presence in Niger, with around 1,500 troops stationed there to assist in combating jihadist insurgency.

Niger’s new rulers have also denounced military agreements with France and have faced demands from an organization called the Patriotic Front for Niger Sovereignty (FPS) to adopt a hard stance against France. This organization has labeled the French envoy as a “French citizen in an irregular situation” on Niger’s soil and has called for a large demonstration followed by a sit-in near a French military base.

Niger, a landlocked former French colony in the Sahel region, struggles with low levels of prosperity and ongoing jihadist insurgencies. The country experienced a democratic transition of power in 2021, which was rare in its history. The current crisis has raised concerns in the West African region, as several countries have witnessed military takeovers. Efforts are being made for a peaceful resolution, including Algeria proposing a six-month transition to return to civilian rule, while the military rulers have suggested a three-year transition period.
