First Lady Tinubu Replies Critics: “We Are Not Intimidated, It’s Not Only Akara” (Video)
Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting small-scale traders across the country, stating that criticism of the initiative will not deter the administration from empowering Nigerians in the informal sector.
According to Ireporter Online, the First Lady made the remarks on Monday during an event in Jigawa State, where she announced a ₦100 million intervention package for 2,000 female petty traders. Under the scheme, each beneficiary will receive ₦50,000 to support and expand their businesses.
Mrs. Tinubu’s comments come amid widespread reactions to an earlier statement in which she highlighted low-capital businesses such as akara, roasted corn, and kuli-kuli as examples of ventures that could benefit from government grants. The remarks, which circulated widely on social media, sparked criticism from many Nigerians who argued that they did not adequately address the country’s prevailing economic hardships.
Responding to the backlash, the First Lady clarified that the empowerment initiative is not limited to akara vendors but extends to a broad range of petty traders, including sellers of tomatoes, peppers, vegetables, roasted plantain (boli), and other small-scale businesses. She stressed that the programme is designed to provide grants rather than loans, enabling beneficiaries to strengthen their livelihoods without the burden of repayment.
Mrs. Tinubu maintained that the administration remains focused on improving the welfare of grassroots entrepreneurs and will not be distracted by what she described as misleading reports surrounding the initiative.
She expressed confidence that those benefiting from the programme would appreciate the support, adding that the government remains committed to expanding opportunities for petty traders across the country despite public criticism.
