President Bola Tinubu has designated Michael Achimugu, a former aide of ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar who publicly accused Atiku of corruption, as a director at the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).
In preparation for the 2023 general elections, Achimugu had accused his former boss, Atiku, of corruption and financial impropriety. Nonetheless, he assumed the position of the new Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the NCAA on Friday.

This appointment came shortly after Tinubu authorized the removal of all directors of agencies in the aviation ministry as part of ongoing efforts to overhaul Nigeria’s aviation sector for a safer and more efficient air travel experience.

On Thursday, the president had sanctioned the appointment of new directors for five agencies under the ministry. Achimugu’s inclusion in the list of newly appointed directors at the NCAA has led to speculations that he was rewarded for his opposition to Atiku during the previous election.
“There are basically two reasons which I have repeated over and over on social media. First is that young persons like myself who served politicians will never again be taken for granted. Second, it is to warn Nigerians and educate them before the elections to prevent them from making the greatest mistake ever,” he said.
“If Nigerians think that they have seen corruption before, let them wait until they make the mistake of voting the Atiku family into office.”
Michael Achimugu’s accusations prompted Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and former spokesperson for the APC presidential campaign council, to call for the arrest of Atiku. Keyamo, in a petition dated January 16, urged anti-graft agencies to apprehend the former vice president on charges of money laundering, breach of the Code of Conduct Act, conspiracy, and criminal breach of trust and misappropriation. Keyamo asserted that the APC campaign was acting on Achimugu’s allegations, who claimed to be a former aide to the PDP candidate.
Atiku, who lost to Tinubu in the presidential election, faced issues arising from these allegations, but they have since subsided. On Saturday, Carol Adekotujo, the head of public relations at NCAA, announced in a statement that Achimugu has assumed office at the NCAA office in Abuja. Prior to his new appointment, Achimugu served as the Special Assistant on Customer Relations and Special Assistant on Media to Keyamo.
