Former Kano Governor Shekarau Defends Tinubu’s Choice Of South West Security Chiefs

Former Kano State Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, has expressed his support for President Bola Tinubu’s decision to appoint heads of security agencies from the South West. In a recent interview with Ireporteronline, Shekarau, who is also the interim chairman of the League of Northern Democrats (LND), stated that the group has no objections to the appointments as long as the individuals chosen are competent.

Shekarau emphasized that the primary concern of the LND is the development of the North, and not the regional background of the appointees. He noted that the capability of the security chiefs to perform their duties effectively is what matters most. “It should be a challenge to the North but it does not bother us as long as they (the appointees) are capable,” he said.

Reflecting on past administrations, Shekarau mentioned that former President Muhammadu Buhari also made similar regional appointments during his tenure, appointing several key security figures from the North.

Contrary to speculation, Shekarau clarified that the LND is not a pressure group but is focused on addressing the social and economic challenges facing the North. He also pointed out that if Northern governors were more proactive, the region would not be experiencing its current difficulties.

Shekarau’s stance comes amidst ongoing debates over regional representation in government appointments, with some critics arguing that President Tinubu’s selections may lead to perceptions of sectional favoritism. However, Shekarau’s comments suggest that the priority for the North should be on competence and regional development rather than regional balance in appointments.
