In a candid discussion with reporters at the Government House in Makurdi, Governor Alia recounted a lighthearted encounter with Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo, who playfully teased him about his transition during a conversation about his motivations.
Reflecting on this exchange, Governor Alia explained that his decision to venture into politics was driven by a deep-seated desire to continue the church’s mission of saving souls and preventing people from being lost. He viewed his entry into partisan politics as an extension of this divine purpose, aiming to serve and uplift the disadvantaged masses of Benue State.
A former Catholic priest with 33 years of service, Governor Alia expressed his intimate familiarity with the struggles faced by the local community, particularly the marginalized and vulnerable individuals who often lacked social representation and support.
Driven by a profound sense of duty to these neglected groups, Governor Alia felt compelled to address the systemic injustices and neglect they endured, prompting his decision to enter politics as a means of effecting positive change.
Despite facing suspension from the priesthood due to his political aspirations, Governor Alia clarified that the church does not inherently oppose priests engaging in partisan politics, especially in cases involving multiple political parties. He emphasized the nuanced perspective held by the church, acknowledging circumstances where societal dysfunction necessitates a priest’s intervention to bring about meaningful change.
Governor Alia underscored the importance of understanding this nuanced perspective, reaffirming his commitment to serving and uplifting all individuals, particularly those in need of assistance, in his political endeavors.
