Group Attacks APC Guber Candidate, Alia Over Alleged Insult On Catholic Bishop

The Forum of Concerned Christians (FCC), an organization, has voiced worry about purported insults made against His Lordship, Chikpa Wilfred Anagbe CMF, the Catholic bishop of Makurdi Diocese, by the supporters of Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, the APC’s governorship candidate.

The FCC claimed that after Alia’s suspension as a priest, his supporters started calling the Bishop derogatory names in a statement released by its president, Bro. Augustine Aende.

The Catholic Church’s leadership suspended the APC candidate earlier this year due to his engagement in political politics.

A “particularly dangerous and unacceptable trend,” according to the group, were the allegedly financed media attacks on the Bishop.

Investigations, in their opinion, had shown that people who were disparaging Bishop Anagbe on social media were ardent fans of Fr. Alia and had pictures of the APC candidate on their profiles.

The statement reads, “What was the APC candidate, a priest of the Holy Roman Catholic Church aiming to achieve with the torrents of insults being rained on the Bishop by his supporters? How do the hatred and insults translate to votes for him in the next 2023 governorship election?

“We have it on good authority that the Bishop of Makurdi Diocese is not responsible for Alia’s failures as a priest and now as a politician. His current suspension is not the first.”

It further alleged that, “He was suspended from Makurdi too as a result of his negative conduct that was against the rules and principles of the church. Bishop Anagbe did not ask Alia to leave the priesthood and join politics, so how is the Bishop liable for his suspension?”

the group said , the APC gubernatorial candidate has deviated from marketing himself during campaign to “embarking on a campaign of calumny against the Bishop” and other people of the State.
