According to Ireporter Online, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has shared how he eventually developed admiration and a close relationship with Nigerian entertainer, Charly Boy, despite initially being put off by his unconventional appearance and lifestyle.

Speaking during an interview on the Before Tomorrow Comes Podcast, released on YouTube on Thursday, Obasanjo explained that his first impression of Charly Boy was far from positive, noting that he struggled to reconcile the entertainer’s style with the respectable image of his late father, Supreme Court Justice Chukwudifu Oputa.

He recalled his long-standing respect and friendship with Justice Oputa, describing him as a disciplined, well-groomed, and highly principled individual. This, he said, shaped his expectations when he later encountered Charly Boy, whom he initially viewed as the opposite of his father’s refined persona.

Obasanjo stated that his early perception of the entertainer was influenced by his appearance, which he described as unconventional, adding that he did not initially hold him in high regard.

However, the former president said his perspective changed after he visited Justice Oputa and discovered him being cared for by Charly Boy in his home. He noted that what impressed him most was the entertainer’s dedication and attentiveness to his father, which, according to him, surpassed superficial judgments about appearance.

He further explained that this experience gradually drew him closer to Charly Boy, leading him to understand that the entertainer’s unique style was part of his comedic identity and means of expression.

Obasanjo also reflected on his relationship with Charly Boy’s mother, describing her as a woman of strong moral character, and commended the entertainer for also taking good care of her during her lifetime.

He added that over time, he learned to appreciate Charly Boy beyond his eccentric fashion sense, recognizing deeper life lessons in his choices and individuality, particularly his commitment to pursuing his own path despite expectations.

Obasanjo concluded by noting that Charly Boy’s relationship with his parents offers important lessons for families, stressing that while parents should guide their children, they should also allow them the freedom to pursue lives that reflect their true identities, as long as they remain within acceptable moral boundaries.
