Jonathan Drops Key Conditions For Nigeria’s Future Growth On 64th Independence Day

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has commended both citizens and leaders as Nigeria celebrates its 64th Independence anniversary, acknowledging the progress made in various sectors that deserve recognition.

In his Independence Day message, Jonathan emphasized the significance of the day, stating, “Today marks a crucial milestone in our nation’s history. On this 64th anniversary, we honor the nationalists who fought for and ended colonial rule.”

Reflecting on the journey since 1960, Jonathan noted that the country has made steady strides in different sectors while overcoming numerous challenges on its path to nationhood. He highlighted that since the return to democracy 25 years ago, following the end of military rule in 1999, Nigeria has seen sustained democratic governance.

“We have recorded notable growth in our economy and Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and we have preserved our unity and belief in the social fabric of our nation,” he added.

However, the former president outlined key areas where Nigeria must improve to achieve its full potential. He stressed the importance of strengthening institutions and ensuring that elections are peaceful, free, fair, and transparent.

Jonathan urged Nigerians to remain committed to the principles of justice, equity, and inclusion. He also emphasized the need for leaders to harness the country’s diversity and invest in the potential of the youth.

“Despite the progress made, we still face critical challenges, particularly in security, economic growth, national unity, and infrastructure development,” Jonathan acknowledged.

“To deepen democracy and foster inclusive economic growth, we must strengthen institutions and promote a democratic culture that supports peaceful, transparent, and credible elections. This is the foundation of good governance, sustainable democracy, and national unity,” Jonathan advised.

He concluded his message with a call for optimism, resilience, and unity among Nigerians, stating, “Together, with shared purpose and love for one another, we can overcome our challenges and build the prosperous nation we all dream of, where every citizen has equal opportunities to thrive.”
