Jonathan Calls For Urgent Reform: Free, Fair Elections Key To Nigeria’s Survival

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has praised the citizens and leaders of Nigeria as the nation celebrates its 64th Independence anniversary. He acknowledged the progress Nigeria has made across various sectors, emphasizing the importance of recognizing these achievements.

In his Independence Day message on Tuesday, Jonathan stated, “Today marks an important milestone in our nation’s history. As we commemorate the 64th anniversary of Nigeria’s independence, we honor the nationalists who fought to end colonial rule.”

Reflecting on the country’s journey since 1960, he highlighted, “We have come a long way, making steady strides in various areas and overcoming numerous challenges along our path to nationhood. Over time, we have achieved modest progress in our shared aspirations as a people. Our democracy has been sustained for 25 years in this Fourth Republic since the end of military rule in 1999. Our economy has also seen perceptible growth, including our GDP, and we have managed to maintain unity and belief in the social fabric of our nation.”

Jonathan emphasized that for Nigeria to reach its full potential, it must strengthen its institutions. He also underscored the necessity of peaceful, free, fair, and transparent elections as fundamental to achieving progress.

He urged Nigerians to commit to justice, equity, and inclusion, calling on leaders to embrace the country’s diversity and harness the potential of the youth.

“However, we still face critical challenges that test our resolve as a people,” Jonathan said, noting that security, economic growth, national cohesion, and infrastructure development remain significant areas of concern.

“To deepen our democracy and foster inclusive economic growth, we must prioritize strengthening our institutions and developing a democratic culture that upholds peaceful, transparent, free, and fair elections. These elements form the foundation of good governance, sustainable democracy, national unity, and peaceful coexistence.”

Jonathan called on Nigerians to remain optimistic and committed to the nation’s success, despite the current challenges. “With a shared purpose, determination, and love for one another, we can overcome our difficulties and build the prosperous nation of our dreams, where every citizen has equal opportunities to succeed.”
