Just In: Atiku Abubakar Urges Opposition-Unity To Safeguard Nigerian-Democracy (View Details)
Former Nigerian Vice President and the 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has sounded a clarion call for unity among opposition parties, warning that their failure to coalesce poses a grave threat to Nigeria’s democracy.
In a statement issued to mark this year’s Democracy Day, Atiku underscored the importance of political alliances in advancing the cause of democracy. He lamented the absence of a cohesive coalition among opposition parties, asserting that their inability to articulate a shared vision for good governance undermines the democratic process.
Atiku harked back to the collaborative efforts of political leaders in the struggle against military rule, highlighting the pivotal role played by alliances in ushering in the current era of electoral politics. He commended Nigerians for sustaining an uninterrupted period of democratic governance for 25 years and emphasized the need for continued vigilance in safeguarding democratic principles.
However, Atiku expressed concern over the lack of concerted action by opposition parties, arguing that their disunity places them in a position of culpability. He urged opposition stakeholders to recognize the urgency of forming a coalition, emphasizing that Nigeria’s progress hinges on their ability to unite behind a common agenda.
The former vice president’s remarks serve as a rallying cry for opposition forces to set aside differences and prioritize the collective interest of the nation. Atiku’s call to action resonates against the backdrop of political polarization and growing discontentment with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
As Nigeria navigates the challenges of democratic consolidation, Atiku’s advocacy for opposition unity underscores the critical role of political parties in shaping the country’s future trajectory. Whether his appeal will galvanize a renewed sense of purpose among opposition ranks remains to be seen, but his message serves as a timely reminder of the imperative to fortify democratic institutions and processes in Nigeria.
