Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors from across the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) convened in Abuja to accelerate plans for the launch of the ECO, a single currency aimed at catalyzing economic growth and integration in the region.
Nigeria’s endorsement of this initiative was highlighted, with Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, emphasizing the ECO’s pivotal role in regional economic development. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to ensuring the successful implementation of the ECO, underscoring its potential to foster monetary stability and enhance trade among the fifteen ECOWAS member states.
The meeting marked a significant milestone in the roadmap towards introducing the ECO, focusing on crucial preparatory measures to pave the way for a more unified economic future.
Key participants included the Central Bank of Nigeria and representatives from member states such as Cape Verde’s Minister of Finance, Mr. Olavo Correia, Cote d’Ivoire’s Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, Mr. Adama Coulibaly, and Ghana’s Minister of Finance, Mr. Mohammed Amin Adam. Together, they formed a united front dedicated to shaping a prosperous economic landscape for West Africa.
A statement from the gathering highlighted a renewed sense of purpose towards the ECO’s introduction, with participants expressing confidence in its potential to reshape the regional economy positively. This collective effort underscores a shared vision for a more integrated and prosperous future for all ECOWAS member states.
