In a significant update on the state of Nigeria’s power grid, Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu has shed light on recent advancements in tackling the longstanding challenges within the national electricity network….CONTINUE READING
Speaking on Friday at the ongoing Ministerial Sectorial Update, an initiative aimed at showcasing ministerial achievements, Adelabu underscored the absence of grid collapses over the past two months as a pivotal sign of progress.
“You can see that for the past two months now, the power grid has not collapsed because we’re also on top of it and we’re trying our best to ensure that we minimise the occurrence of this,” Adelabu stated.
He highlighted the importance of finding a permanent solution to grid collapses, citing the necessity of automated control of frequency and voltage on the grid. Adelabu pointed towards an application called Security Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) as the key to achieving this goal.
“We’ve been trying this thing for the last 10 to 12 years. But just last week, we had intervention from the World Bank,” he revealed.
Adelabu outlined that the World Bank has allocated 24 months for the implementation of SCADA, expressing confidence that with their involvement, success is imminent.
“We now use a locally developed Internet of Things whereby you’re only able to see a portion of the generation and transmission locations while others are not on the network but with SCADA, 100 percent of the locations are going to be on the network,” he added.
The Minister’s remarks shed light on the government’s proactive approach towards enhancing Nigeria’s power infrastructure, offering hope for a more reliable and resilient electricity grid in the near future.
