Kano Mass Wedding: Why 264 Couples’ Wedding Was Suspended

The wedding ceremony for 264 out of the 1,800 couples chosen for the state-sponsored mass wedding by the Kano State Government has been postponed due to health concerns. The prospective partners tested positive for certain ailments and are currently undergoing treatment.

Sheikh Aminu Daurawa, the Commander-General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, the agency overseeing the mass wedding, disclosed this during a reception held for the couples at the Government House in Kano on Saturday.

He reported that on Friday, no fewer than 1,500 couples successfully tied the knot.

Daurawa assured that once the necessary medical treatments are completed, a new date will be announced for the wedding of the remaining 264 couples. He commended the state government for its transparent and proper handling of the wedding scheme.

Offering prayers for the couples’ enduring marital happiness, Daurawa urged them to maintain a deep reverence for God in their interactions.

Senator Rabi’u Kwankwaso, the National leader of the NNPP, advised the newlyweds against intruding into their spouses’ personal privacy, particularly by checking their phones, as this can lead to marital discord. He emphasized that such behavior is a significant factor contributing to marriage breakdowns.

Kwankwaso praised Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration for initiating and successfully executing the mass wedding program, as well as for allocating over N700 million to sponsor more than 600 students to study abroad.

Yusuf clarified that the beneficiaries of the mass wedding were selected from all 44 local government areas and 484 wards of the state. He noted that at least 30 couples were chosen from each of the 44 local government areas.

The governor affirmed that the state government assumes full responsibility for the marriages, including covering dowry expenses, providing furniture, supplying wedding essentials, and granting the brides N20,000 to establish small-scale businesses in their new homes.

Yusuf urged the couples to lead harmonious lives in accordance with Islamic teachings.
