The victims were taken when gunmen intercepted the school bus carrying 25 pupils home after school hours.
The principal of the secondary section of the school, Boje Olanireti, confirmed the ransom demand, revealing that the incident occurred just a five-minute drive from the school. Olanireti recounted the harrowing experience, stating, “When the gunmen attacked them, they shot the tire of the vehicle and asked the children to come out of the bus. They asked all of them to lie down. They picked five students and four staff members.”
The kidnapped victims include two secondary school students, three primary school students, two teachers, a driver, and a bus assistant. The parents, upon learning about the incident, have been making frantic efforts and reaching out to various security outfits, including the police and Amotekun, for assistance.
A family source from Eporo Ekiti confirmed that the kidnappers had contacted the family of one of the children, demanding N100 million for the release of all the victims. The source revealed, “The parents are at Eporo. The bus was taking them home after closing. It was in the process that the kidnappers struck. None of the families of the abductees can afford the ransom.”
As the community grapples with this alarming situation, the demand for such a substantial ransom underscores the severity of the security challenges faced by the region.
