Kulio’s ‘Kentamine’ Is Attracting Fresh Global Attention To Highlife Music
According to Ireporter Online, a renewed global spotlight is being placed on Nigerian Highlife music as Lagos-based Afro-Soul artist Chimezie Emmanuel, popularly known as Kulio, continues to gain international attention with his latest single, Kentamine.
For decades, Highlife music stood as one of Africa’s most influential cultural exports, widely celebrated for its rich storytelling tradition, intricate guitar arrangements, and strong indigenous identity. The genre once dominated the West African music landscape and gained international recognition through legendary figures, including the late Dr. Orlando Owoh, who played a key role in shaping its modern sound.
However, over time, Highlife gradually lost mainstream commercial dominance as newer African sounds, particularly Afrobeats, rose to global prominence, especially across European and international markets.
That narrative is now beginning to shift, with Kulio emerging as one of the artists driving renewed interest in the genre. His sound blends Highlife foundations with Afro-Soul and contemporary African rhythms, creating a fusion that is drawing attention from global audiences.
Since the release of Kentamine, the song has reportedly gained traction on several international editorial platforms. Illustrate Magazine, in its coverage, described Kulio’s rise as being “rooted in rhythm, resilience, and a deep sense of identity,” reflecting growing recognition of his artistic direction.
Streaming data shared by his team indicates increasing momentum for the record, with Kentamine reportedly featured on over 200 Spotify playlists. The track is also said to be generating more than 1,000 daily streams, while additional growth has been recorded through Spotify Radio algorithms, pushing its total to over 3,000 streams in that category.
Kulio’s artistry has been defined by emotional depth and a strong connection to African musical heritage. His sound draws from Highlife, Afrobeat, and contemporary R&B influences, positioning him as a bridge between traditional African rhythm and modern global soundscapes.
His musical journey reportedly began in the church, where he served as a konga drummer, an experience that shaped his understanding of rhythm and percussion. This early foundation is reflected in his distinctive vocal delivery and emotionally layered songwriting style.
A major turning point in his career was also linked to a life-altering accident, which is said to have deepened his artistic resolve and inspired his debut single, Magic, produced by Typea.
With Kentamine, produced by Flamez, Kulio further expands his creative expression, exploring themes of emotional detachment, introspection, and inner silence, using melody and rhythm to convey complex emotions beyond words.
His growing visibility has also been boosted by live performances on platforms such as Glitch Africa, where he has introduced his sound to wider audiences across Africa and the diaspora.
As Afrobeats continues its global expansion, industry observers suggest Kulio is part of a new wave of African artists reconnecting contemporary music with foundational genres like Highlife. Kentamine is increasingly being viewed not just as a single release, but as part of a broader cultural resurgence aimed at repositioning Highlife within today’s global streaming ecosystem.
With rising international attention, increasing streaming numbers, and a sound deeply rooted in African authenticity, Kulio is gradually being recognised as one of the emerging voices contributing to a modern revival of Highlife music on the global stage.
