Lagos BRT Fares Set For A Major Hike – Here’s What You Need To Know

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced an 18% increase in fares under its Bus Reform Initiative (BRI), set to take effect on February 17, 2025.

“The fare increase is due to the rising cost of operations and the necessity to keep buses running, ensuring smooth movement across the city,” the statement read.

LAMATA urged commuters to understand and cooperate with the new pricing structure.

This isn’t the first fare hike in Lagos’ BRT system. On June 30, 2022, the state government approved a ₦100 increase on all BRT routes, attributing the decision to high diesel costs and a shortage of spare parts, which left many buses out of service.

Meanwhile, Fola Tinubu, Managing Director of Primero Transport Services Limited—one of the operators of the Lagos BRT—recently revealed that the company plans to convert its buses to compressed natural gas (CNG) under the federal government’s initiative. However, he clarified that this move will not result in a fare reduction, as the company aims to remain profitable.

With the latest fare hike, Lagos commuters will have to brace for higher transportation costs, even as the government explores alternative energy solutions for public transit.
