Nollywood actress Rita Edochie has weighed in on the ongoing property dispute within the family of late comic actor Mr Ibu, describing the situation as another example of the damaging effects of polygamy on families.

According to Ireporter Online, the disagreement between Mr Ibu’s widow, Stella Maris, and some of the late actor’s children from other relationships over the ownership and sale of his properties has continued to generate widespread public attention.

Reacting to the controversy in an Instagram post, Rita Edochie argued that the unfolding events reinforce her long-held belief that polygamy often breeds division, conflict and instability within families. She maintained that no matter how the practice is defended or celebrated as part of African culture, its long-term consequences frequently outweigh any perceived benefits.

The veteran actress stated that the late Mr Ibu made a grave mistake by embracing a polygamous family structure, insisting that such arrangements have repeatedly led to broken relationships, inheritance disputes, unhealthy rivalry and prolonged family crises.

She further noted that her dislike for polygamy has grown stronger over time, stressing that life continues to present numerous examples of how the practice threatens peace and unity in homes. According to her, while some people continue to defend polygamy, its aftermath often leaves behind bitterness, divided loyalties, jealousy and fierce competition among family members, especially after the death of the family patriarch.

Rita Edochie described the ongoing dispute within Mr Ibu’s family as a painful reminder of the challenges associated with polygamous homes. She urged individuals currently in such family settings, as well as those considering polygamy, to reflect on the recurring conflicts that often emerge over inheritance and family affairs, warning that the present situation should serve as a cautionary lesson.
