Lagos Drops From 4th To 5th Among Wealthiest Cities In Africa
Lagos, the renowned economic powerhouse of West Africa, has seen a notable decline in its ranking among Africa’s wealthiest cities, according to the latest Africa Wealth Report 2024 by Henley & Partners. The city, once positioned prominently as the fourth wealthiest city on the continent, has now slid to fifth place, marking a significant shift in its high-net-worth landscape…..READ ALSO Lagos State Commences Demolition Of Buildings
The report reveals that Lagos currently hosts 4,200 millionaires, reflecting a decrease from the 5,400 millionaires recorded in the previous year. This decline of 1,200 high-net-worth individuals underscores a notable reconfiguration in the city’s wealth distribution.
However, despite this downturn, Lagos continues to serve as a crucial economic epicenter within Africa, accommodating over half of Nigeria’s millionaire population. The city remains instrumental for major African conglomerates such as the Dangote Group and Zenith Bank, with key sectors including basic materials, oil and gas, transportation, and financial services thriving within its boundaries.
Surpassing Lagos in the wealth rankings are Johannesburg and Cape Town in South Africa, Cairo in Egypt, and Nairobi in Kenya, claiming the top four positions with 12,300, 7,400, 7,200, and 4,400 millionaires, respectively. These cities maintain their stature as leading centers of economic prosperity and investment opportunities on the continent.
Conversely, cities like Dar Es Salaam, Tangier, Algiers, Grand Baie, and Kigali find themselves at the lower end of the wealth spectrum, each hosting fewer than 1,200 millionaires.
Despite the current fluctuations, the outlook for Africa’s high-net-worth population remains optimistic. The report forecasts a robust growth of 65 percent in the number of millionaires across the continent by 2030, driven by economic expansion in several key cities.
“We expect the key wealth-creating industries to be fintech, eco-tourism, business process outsourcing, software development, rare metals mining, green tech, media and entertainment, and wealth management,” highlighted Henley & Partners, underlining the diverse sectors poised to contribute to Africa’s burgeoning wealth landscape in the coming years.
As Lagos navigates its evolving position in Africa’s wealth hierarchy, it stands poised to leverage its strategic advantages and economic potential to reclaim its standing among the continent’s most affluent cities.
