During the 2024 strategic retreat for staff of the Joint Tax Board, the Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, outlined the government’s plan to establish a National Tax Amnesty Programme alongside the proposed bill.
In response to this development, the Chief Spokesman of the LP Campaign Organisation, Yunusa Tanko, praised the government’s initiative but raised concerns about its enforceability. Tanko emphasized the importance of not only introducing such legislation but also ensuring its effective implementation to achieve tangible results.
Tanko highlighted the existing legal provisions that disqualify individuals convicted of certain offenses from contesting elections, emphasizing the need for robust enforcement mechanisms. He underscored the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring that politicians are held accountable for any wrongdoing.
Ultimately, Tanko emphasized the significance of enforcing existing laws and regulations to create a political environment characterized by transparency, integrity, and accountability. He urged authorities to prioritize the enforcement of laws aimed at promoting ethical conduct among politicians and safeguarding the democratic process.
