Madugu Fires Back At Critics As Super Falcons Bounce Back Against Zambia

Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu has responded to criticism surrounding his tactical decisions after Nigeria secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Zambia at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

According to Ireporter Online, Madugu faced intense scrutiny following Nigeria’s unexpected 3-2 defeat to tournament debutants Malawi, with fans and analysts questioning his team selection and tactical approach.

The coach made several changes for the must-win encounter against Zambia, bringing back experienced forward Asisat Oshoala, Deborah Abiodun and Christy Ucheibe into the starting line-up. Rofiat Imuran also started, while substitute Shukurat Oladipo made a notable impact after coming on.

Oshoala’s early strike in the eighth minute proved decisive as Nigeria held on for victory despite playing with 10 players for more than half of the match following Tosin Demehin’s red card in the 40th minute.

Speaking after the game, Madugu admitted that the team’s performance against Malawi was below expectations but praised the players for showing resilience and responding positively against Zambia.

The coach explained that setbacks are part of football and said the team improved by correcting mistakes from their previous outing.

Madugu also dismissed concerns over criticism, stating that coaches must be prepared to face different opinions while remaining focused on their responsibilities.

He said criticism is part of football management and that his priority remains making decisions he believes will benefit the team.

Super Falcons defender Michelle Alozie, who was named Player of the Match, praised the team’s determination and discipline after overcoming a difficult challenge against Zambia.

Alozie acknowledged Zambia’s quality, describing them as a strong, physical and technically gifted side, while commending the team for maintaining their composure after going down to 10 players.

The victory keeps Nigeria’s hopes of progressing to the quarter-finals alive. The Super Falcons now have three points from two Group C matches, while Malawi currently leads the group with six points after defeating Egypt 3-1.

Zambia also has three points and sits ahead of Nigeria on goal difference, while Egypt remains without a point in the group.

Nigeria’s final group-stage match against Egypt on Wednesday has become a crucial encounter, with the Super Falcons needing a convincing victory and a favourable result from the other group fixture to advance.

The team is aiming to secure another continental title and continue their pursuit of an 11th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations trophy, alongside qualification hopes for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
