Moghalu Warns Public Officials: Today’s Hunters Could Become Tomorrow’s Prey
According to Ireporter Online, Kingsley Moghalu, former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has commented on the recent prosecution of former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami.
Moghalu, in a post on his account, described Malami’s Tuesday arraignment alongside his son and wife on 16 counts of alleged money laundering involving billions of naira as a reminder of the fleeting nature of power in Nigeria.
He emphasized that holding public office in the country has become increasingly disconnected from competence and integrity. Moghalu warned that those who misuse their positions may eventually face accountability, stating, “By now anyone taking public office in Nigeria should understand the transience of power, especially in a country where public office has progressively become uncoupled from competence, ideology, or values such as integrity. When people carry on in office like tomorrow will never arrive, the hunters will become the hunted.”
He clarified that his remarks were general and not a verdict on Malami’s case, adding that the courts should determine his guilt or innocence. Moghalu also criticized recent trends at the central bank, noting it appeared to prioritize agricultural initiatives under Governor Godwin Emefiele, diverging from traditional central banking priorities.
