Abuja: Edo State top politician, Moses Omo-Ikirodah has commended the approval of electronic transmission of election results by the Senate, according to the politician the U-turn by the Senate in yielding to the yearnings of the people is a positive development and it is worthy of applause. He reiterated the importance of electronic transmission of results and thanked INEC for its effort in improving the credibility of elections in Nigeria.

” No doubt the right to transmit results by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)  without subjecting their discretion to any other organ is the hallmark of electoral credibility, this singular act would deepen our democracy and would erase the menace associated with intimidation of collation officers by politicians, security agents and thugs, as well as misconduct by INEC staff and logistical shortfalls.

It is a known fact in Nigeria that you can win elections at the polling unit but unfortunately lose out at the collation centres, I have always opined that the electronic transmission of results would improve the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process and restore the confidence of the electorates. This is one of the best models for transparency and I applaud the Senate for finally accepting the wishes of the people”

However, the politician faulted the adoption of direct primaries for political parties arguing that it should be the prerogatives of political parties to choose their mode of conducting primaries.

The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday adopted electronic transmission of election results, a position that was contained in the Conference Committee report submitted to the chamber.
