The suspects, aged between 27 and 56, displayed no remorse, attributing their desperate actions to the harsh economic conditions in the country. With cassava flakes (garri), sachet water, and snacks as their provisions, they left their homes in Lagos and other parts of Nigeria, paying fishermen to transport them to the ship’s location under the cover of darkness.

The bubble burst when the NNS Beecroft deployed its Quick Response Team, discovering the stowaways in the vessel’s rudder compartment on February 3, 2024, around 12:30 pm.

Commodore Kolawole Oguntuga, the Commander of NNS Beecroft and Maritime Component Commander Operation AWATSE, commended the proactive detection and extraction, preventing life-threatening situations during the extended voyage within confined spaces. He highlighted the security threats averted, safeguarding the vessel, its crew, and preventing potential embarrassing situations.

Speaking to journalists, one of the stowaways, Wisdom Egharevba, revealed that this was his second attempt to escape the country’s hardships, emphasizing the dire economic conditions. Samson Army, another detainee, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the extreme economic challenges that led them to take such risks.

The daring escape attempt sheds light on the desperate measures individuals are resorting to amid challenging economic circumstances, with the Navy’s intervention preventing potential life-threatening consequences.
