Speaking on Monday at a national conference aimed at strengthening democracy in Nigeria, organized by the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy, and Development (Centre LSD), the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD), the Peering Advocacy and Advancement Centre in Africa (PAACA), and the National Peace Committee (NPC), Atiku expressed his fears for the nation’s democratic future.

He criticized instances where courts, rather than the electorate, determine the outcomes of elections.

“We are at a decisive moment in our democratic journey. We must choose to uphold democracy or risk abandoning it,” he stated.

Atiku emphasized the need for the National Assembly to enact laws that reinforce Nigeria’s democratic processes, ensuring their sustainability.

Reflecting on his previous recommendations for amending the Electoral Act, Atiku noted that while he proposed changes in good faith, he was aware they would likely not be implemented.

He also drew attention to Turkey’s recent elections, where the electoral body refused to declare President Recep Erdogan the winner after he fell short by 0.5% of the required votes, securing 49.5%. Turkey’s constitution mandates a minimum of 50% for a candidate to be declared the winner.

Atiku questioned whether Nigeria’s electoral body could demonstrate similar integrity and adherence to democratic principles.
