Nigeria has achieved a significant milestone on the global stage, emerging as a leader in digital governance after winning two prestigious awards at the 2025 Open Government Partnership (OGP) Global Summit held in Spain.

According to Ireporter Online, the country clinched the overall global award in the Digital Governance category, surpassing 160 commitments submitted by 42 participating nations. Nigeria also earned the Regional Award for Africa and the Middle East for its outstanding strides in advancing open digital governance, underscoring its success in leveraging technology to promote transparency and citizen participation.

The achievement was driven by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) in collaboration with Dataphyte, reflecting a strong partnership between government and civil society in the pursuit of digital inclusivity and accountability.

Nigeria’s winning entries showcased innovative policies, digital platforms, and strategic collaborations that have transformed governance into a more participatory and technology-driven system, aligning with the nation’s long-term digital transformation agenda.

Observers have described the recognition as a validation of NITDA’s commitment to building an inclusive and citizen-focused digital ecosystem under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy.

Industry analysts believe the global recognition reinforces Nigeria’s influence as a key voice in shaping the future of open and digital governance across the continent and beyond. The awards are also expected to inspire the government to further deepen citizen engagement, promote open data practices, and strengthen accountability through the deployment of innovative technology solutions.
