Nigerian Man Who Joined U.S. Navy Dies After Falling Off Ship In Red Sea

The U.S. Navy confirmed that Aregbesola was lost overboard from USS Mason (DDG 87) during operations in the Red Sea. Aregbesola, who hailed from Florida, joined the Navy in July 2020 and reported to Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 74 in December 2020.

Cmdr. Eric Kohut, commanding officer of HSM-74, praised Aregbesola’s selfless character and warrior spirit, stating that he went beyond aircraft maintenance and valued every member of the ship/air team.

Mason and HSM-74 are part of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group, currently deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations.

A friend of the deceased mourned him on social media, quoting a tweet shared by Aregbesola announcing his enlistment into the U.S. Navy after denouncing Nigeria.
