Nigerian Navy Names New Official Spokesperson

According to Ireporter Online, the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, has approved the appointment of Captain Abiodun Folorunsho as the new Director of Naval Information and official spokesperson of the Nigerian Navy.

Captain Folorunsho officially assumed duty on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, succeeding Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, who has been redeployed to a higher strategic role as the Commander of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT, the Navy’s foremost operational base. Adams-Aliu served as the Navy’s spokesman for over two years.

The newly appointed spokesperson was born on December 27, 1979, in Benin City, Edo State. He was commissioned into the Nigerian Navy in September 2003 as a Sub-Lieutenant after graduating from the Nigerian Defence Academy as a member of the 50 Regular Course.

Captain Folorunsho holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Nigerian Defence Academy. He also possesses multiple postgraduate qualifications, including a Master’s degree in War Studies (Maritime) from the National Defence University, Pakistan; a Master’s degree in International Affairs and Defence Studies from the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna; a Master’s degree in Energy Management from the World Maritime University, Sweden; and a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the United States Naval War College. In addition, he earned a Graduate Certificate in Ethics and Emerging Military Technology from the same institution.

Throughout his career, he has attended numerous professional courses both locally and internationally, including the Junior and Senior Staff Courses at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, and the Pakistan Navy War College. He also participated in courses at the Naval War College of Nigeria and the United Nations Training Centre in Sweden.

Captain Folorunsho has served on several Nigerian Navy ships and held various command and staff appointments. These include operational duties under Operation SAFE HAVEN, Commanding Officer of the Nuclear, Biological, Chemical Defence and Firefighting School in Sapele, Directing Staff at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, and Military Liaison Officer at the United Nations Mission in South Sudan.

Prior to his appointment, he was the Chief Instructor at the Department of Maritime Warfare, Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, and later served as Assistant Director, Plans/CNS Directive at the Naval Headquarters.

He is a recipient of several awards and decorations, including the Chief of the Naval Staff Award for Best Graduating Student, the United Nations Medal, the Meritorious Service Star, and the General Operations Medal, among others.
