Nigerians React As Federal University Lokoja Unveils First-Ever Zoo In Kogi State, Nigeria (Photos)

In a milestone event aimed at bolstering tourism and conservation efforts in Nigeria, the Federal University Lokoja (FUL) has inaugurated the Federal University Lokoja Zoo and Conservatory (FULZAC), marking the first zoo establishment in Kogi State, North Central Nigeria.

The commissioning ceremony, held recently, underscored the Federal Government’s commitment to enhancing the nation’s economy through tourism, as highlighted by Dr. Ibrahim Musa Goni, the Conservator General of the National Park Service. Dr. Goni emphasized the significant economic impact of tourism, noting its contribution of approximately 3.6% to Nigeria’s GDP annually, equivalent to about $17.3 billion.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Goni praised the visionary leadership of Prof. Olayemi Akinwumi, Vice-Chancellor of Federal University Lokoja, and his management team for spearheading the establishment of FULZAC. He emphasized the pivotal role of zoos and conservatories in biodiversity conservation, education, and research, highlighting their function as living laboratories that foster understanding and appreciation of the natural world.

“Zoos and conservatories play a crucial role in preserving biodiversity and promoting environmental stewardship,” remarked Dr. Goni. He expressed optimism that FULZAC would serve as a hub for innovative research, conservation initiatives, and public education, ultimately contributing to the protection of endangered species and genetic diversity.

In her address, Prof. Jacqueline Azumi Badaki, Director of FULZAC, lauded the proactive leadership of Prof. Akinwumi in realizing the project. She emphasized that FULZAC goes beyond being a mere zoo, functioning also as a conservatory dedicated to replicating natural habitats and supporting conservation, education, and research endeavors.

“The establishment of FULZAC is timely, especially amidst climate change and habitat loss, as it provides a critical platform for captive breeding programs aimed at saving endangered species and reintroducing them into the wild,” Prof. Badaki explained.

The inauguration of FULZAC marks a significant step towards promoting sustainable tourism and biodiversity conservation in Nigeria. With its launch, Federal University Lokoja aims to set new standards in conservation education and public engagement, ensuring a sustainable future for Nigeria’s rich biological heritage.
