and promote economic growth across key sectors, including agriculture, technology, renewable energy, entertainment, and food production.
Launched by the Federal Ministry of Youth Development and the Senate Committee on Sports Development, the program targets significant job creation, with one of its key initiatives—the Youth Farmers’ Cooperative Scheme—seeking to recruit 12 million young farmers within two years to bolster food security and tackle joblessness.
Empowering Youths for National Growth
During the unveiling of NIYEEDEP’s 2025–2027 Action Plan in Abuja on December 2, 2024, Youth Minister Ayodele Olawande emphasized the need for youths to unite in support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision for a prosperous Nigeria. He acknowledged the economic challenges faced by young Nigerians and stressed that NIYEEDEP provides an opportunity for youth to actively contribute to the nation’s development and achieve self-sufficiency.
He highlighted the role of Comrade Kennedy Iyere, who despite past political differences, played a pivotal role in establishing NIYEEDEP. Olawande urged the youth to embrace the opportunities within the program and actively engage in initiatives like Food4All, Waste2Wealth, Arts4Money, and Tech4Jobs—aimed at fostering entrepreneurship, alleviating poverty, and driving socio-economic progress.
A Vision for Economic Transformation
Comrade Kennedy Iyere, Coordinator-General of NIYEEDEP, shared his vision for Nigeria’s youth, expressing confidence that the program would tackle unemployment and create a path to economic stability. He called for national unity to rebuild Nigeria’s economic strength through a youth-driven transformation, affirming that the country’s natural resources and hardworking, intelligent population provide a solid foundation for future success.
Recruitment for the Youth Farmers’ Cooperative Scheme is set to begin on December 9, 2024, signaling a major step towards mass employment and agricultural growth. Through initiatives like NIYEEDEP, the government hopes to lay the groundwork for a brighter, more prosperous future for Nigeria’s youth.
