Nigeria’s Great Folklorist: Tinubu Mourns ‘Gwo Gwo’ Crooner Mike Ejeagha

President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Mike Ejeagha, the legendary highlife musician and Igbo folklorist widely known for his rich storytelling through music. The President offered his condolences to the artist’s family, friends, and the many Nigerians who cherished his craft.

In a statement issued on Saturday by Bayo Onanuga, his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Tinubu praised Ejeagha as “one of Nigeria’s greatest folklorists, songwriters, and musicians in the Igbo language.”

“Gentleman Mike Ejeagha’s music preserved and celebrated Igbo culture. His unique style inspired generations and reminded us that music is a powerful force for healing, unity, and cultural pride,” Tinubu said.

The President also commended the Enugu State Government and Governor Peter Mbah for honoring Ejeagha during his lifetime, stating that such recognition reflects the value of preserving cultural heritage.

Ejeagha passed away Friday evening around 8 p.m. at the 32 Garrison Hospital in Enugu after a prolonged illness. He was 95 years old. His son, Emma Ejeagha, confirmed the death to journalists, saying:

“My father passed away due to a long-standing ailment.”

President Tinubu concluded his tribute by praying for the repose of Ejeagha’s soul and asking for divine comfort for all who mourn his passing.

Legacy of a Legend

Known for timeless classics like “Gwo Gwo,” Ejeagha was revered for his ability to blend Igbo proverbs, life lessons, and melodic rhythms in a way that educated and entertained. His works remain a cornerstone in Nigeria’s cultural and musical history.

Tributes have also poured in from cultural institutions, musicians, and politicians, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who described Ejeagha as a “guardian of Igbo oral tradition.”
