The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the Federal Government to address the grievances of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) regarding withheld salaries and alleged unfair treatment, as the unions embark on a nationwide strike, leading to the closure of universities……READ ALSO Julius Abure Faces No-Confidence Verdict From NLC: Big Trouble Ahead For Labour Party Chairman
In a statement issued on Monday, NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero emphasized the urgency of resolving the issues faced by the unions, particularly the withholding of salaries, which has inflicted hardship on their members.
Ajaero highlighted the lack of credible reasons for withholding salaries, underscoring the detrimental impact on union members. He condemned any attempts to subject the unions to discriminatory treatment, warning that such actions could escalate into avoidable industrial disputes.
Expressing concern for the welfare of students and parents affected by the strike-induced closures of universities, the statement urged the government to swiftly address the outstanding issues to prevent further disruptions in the education sector.
The NLC emphasized the importance of maintaining confidence in public universities and cautioned against exacerbating tensions that could lead to prolonged strikes, ultimately affecting all parties involved.
In conclusion, the NLC urged the government to prioritize the payment of outstanding salaries and to engage constructively with the unions to prevent further disruptions in the education sector.
