No Power To Remove IGP Egbetokun, Says Police Service Commission Over Retirement 

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has clarified that it does not have the constitutional authority to enforce the retirement of Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun. In a statement issued by PSC spokesperson Ikechukwu Ani, the commission emphasized that its mandate does not include determining the appointment or removal of the IGP. The IGP is appointed by the President, with advice from the Police Council, and thus remains outside the PSC’s jurisdiction.

The PSC also confirmed that during its extraordinary meeting on January 31, 2025, it focused solely on reviewing and regularizing the first appointment dates of cadet Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs) and inspector force entrants, a decision that does not affect the IGP.

The commission reiterated that the law clearly defines its role in managing the appointments, promotions, and disciplinary actions of police officers, except for the IGP, and assured the public of its continued collaboration with the IGP for the benefit of the Nigeria Police Force.

In conclusion, the PSC emphasized that it will not seek powers beyond those granted by the Constitution and is committed to supporting the police in fulfilling its constitutional mandate of maintaining law and order in the country.
