The arrest took place at an unauthorized mining site located in Karu Local Government Area, where the illicit trade of lithium was being conducted.

According to Babawale Afolabi, the NSCDC Public Relations Officer, the apprehension was a result of the deployment of specially trained personnel as Federal Government Mining Marshals, who have been tasked with cracking down on activities that undermine the nation’s economy.

During a sting operation, the NSCDC team discovered and subsequently raided the illegal mining operation, leading to the arrest of the four Chinese nationals. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects were indeed operating an illicit site for the sale of lithium.

Afolabi emphasized that the seized minerals would be confiscated in accordance with the provisions of the Minerals and Mining Act of 2007. He also mentioned that the arrested individuals, who claimed affiliation with HOSAN AGRO-ALLIED COMPANY LTD, confessed to operating without the necessary certification or license for dealing in solid minerals.

The Mining Marshall Commander, Attah John Onoja, highlighted the importance of enforcing regulations to curb illegal mining activities and protect the nation’s resources. He stated that legal action would be pursued, including seeking court orders for the forfeiture of the impounded minerals and remitting the proceeds to the Federal Government.

Onoja further warned against unauthorized disposal of minerals and reiterated the commitment of NSCDC to maintaining vigilance in combating economic sabotage.

The arrest of the four Chinese nationals underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to address illegal mining and uphold regulatory standards in Nigeria’s mining sector.
