Ambassador Okey Emuchay, the Secretary-General of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, revealed this in a statement to the Ireporteronline in Owerri on Saturday. The closed-door discussion occurred at the residence of Ohanaeze’s President-General, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, in Owerri on Friday.
Emuchay characterized the meeting as “very symbolic and crucial,” expressing optimism about the fruitful deliberations and anticipating that the outcomes would soon become evident and appreciated by Igbo people globally.
During the meeting, Chief Iwuanyanwu reportedly conveyed to Obasanjo the suggestion that monuments should be erected in Nigeria in honor of the sacrifices made by the former president. Iwuanyanwu also commended Obasanjo for his role in ending the civil war with the slogan ‘no victor, no vanquished,’ highlighting the former president’s patriotic and diplomatic initiatives during his tenure.
The statement mentioned that Iwuanyanwu assured Obasanjo of the Igbo people’s intention to bestow a fitting honor on him at an appropriate time for his love and contributions to the region. Emuchay added that Obasanjo’s presidency provided a sense of belonging to the Igbo nation by appointing several Igbo individuals to high positions in his cabinet.
Accompanying Obasanjo on the visit was Otunba Oyewole Fasawe. Other notable figures present at the meeting included some Igbo leaders and Ohanaeze chieftains, such as Amb. Kema Chikwe, Bishop Sunday Onuoha, Nze Fidelis Ozichukwu, and Chief Tony Ukasanya.
Iwuanyanwu has been actively advocating for the Igbo cause and recently led efforts to address attacks on Igbo residents and traders in Lagos. Additionally, he has persistently called for an end to the alleged marginalization of the region and the unconditional release of the Leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, from incarceration.
