Obasanjo Laughs Off Igbo Paternity Rumors, Emphasizes National Unity

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has finally addressed the long-standing rumors surrounding his alleged Igbo heritage, dismissing them with a sense of humor. Speaking during a meeting with the Ndigbo Amaka Progressive Market Association, held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Obasanjo stated that such claims only serve to amuse him.

“It just makes me laugh,” Obasanjo remarked, according to a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi. The rumors, which have persisted for years, suggest that the former President was born to an Igbo father from Anambra State. However, Obasanjo, who has a strong Yoruba identity, has always focused on his role in Nigeria’s unity and development rather than addressing these speculations.

A respected figure in Nigeria’s political arena, Obasanjo reiterated his commitment to national unity during the meeting. “We own this country together,” he declared, emphasizing that every Nigerian, regardless of ethnic background, shares an equal stake in the nation. He further reflected on the collective effort of various ethnic groups in maintaining Nigeria’s unity, particularly during the civil war. “Having ensured that the Yorubas, Igbos, and Hausas all came together to fight the war of unity in Nigeria… if anybody says to me that somebody should leave any place, he will be the one to leave,” Obasanjo stated.

The meeting with the Ndigbo Amaka Progressive Market Association also focused on the development of the Owerri Central Market, a project that has faced delays since Imo State’s creation. Obasanjo expressed optimism about the market’s potential, describing it as the largest of its kind in Nigeria and a significant opportunity for economic growth.

“I am glad it is coming up again, and I hope this time, we are all going to make it real. It is going to be big, the first of its kind,” Obasanjo said, noting the support from the current Imo State governor. He also offered to lead the marketing team to promote the project, reflecting his confidence in its successful completion.

The Owerri Central Market is poised to become a major hub for commerce and innovation, offering significant economic opportunities and helping reduce unemployment by providing jobs to a large number of people. Chief Emeka Emmanuel, the spokesperson for the Ndigbo Amaka Progressive Market Association, highlighted the market’s potential impact on both the local and national economies. The association envisions the market as a center of entrepreneurship that could set a new standard for trade in Nigeria.

Chief Emeka also sought Obasanjo’s assistance in securing loans for members of the association to purchase shops within the market, emphasizing that Obasanjo’s support would be crucial in bringing the project to life and empowering the local business community.
