Oshiomhole Reveals Emotional Motivation Behind Edo Central Hospital’s Construction

Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo North Senatorial District, has recently expressed his deep disappointment regarding the current state of the Edo Central Hospital, a facility that holds a very personal significance for him. In a live broadcast by TVC, the former governor of Edo State shared the poignant story behind the hospital’s creation and his concerns about its present operation under Governor Godwin Obaseki’s administration.

Oshiomhole revealed that the hospital was built in memory of his late wife, who tragically lost her battle with breast cancer. This loss motivated him to create a state-of-the-art medical facility dedicated to serving all Edo residents, with a particular focus on the early detection and treatment of breast cancer. The senator emphasized that the hospital was envisioned as both a tribute to his wife’s memory and a beacon of hope for women facing similar health challenges.

Reflecting on the hospital’s establishment, Oshiomhole said, “When I was building that central hospital, and you see how beautiful it is, I was building a five-star hospital for Edo people. We built it and equipped it, and President Buhari came to commission it about a week before the end of my tenure.”

However, Oshiomhole’s pride in the hospital’s creation has been overshadowed by his concern over its current management. He accused Governor Obaseki of deviating from the hospital’s original purpose by bringing in external consultants to run the facility. According to Oshiomhole, these consultants are not specialized in managing hospital facilities and have implemented a fee structure that makes the hospital unaffordable for many.

“If you have money, you go there, and they charge you heavily. If you don’t have money, you will go to either a private hospital or the Stella Obasanjo Hospital,” Oshiomhole lamented. “The Central Hospital was built by me after I lost my late wife to breast cancer. The best tribute I could give to her memory was to ensure that no woman dies of breast cancer because it can be detected early and treated. It was never in my contemplation that it would be reserved for the rich.”

Oshiomhole’s heartfelt remarks shed light on the hospital’s significant role in his life and his disappointment over the direction it has taken. His vision for the hospital was rooted in compassion and a desire to prevent others from experiencing the same loss he did, a vision he fears is being compromised by its current management.
