Investigations conducted by Saturday PUNCH reveal that many of these incidents were attributed to high-speed driving and flagrant violations of traffic regulations by motorists.

In one instance on January 2, a multiple-vehicle collision at Aliko Filling Station on the Kaduna-Zaria expressway claimed six lives and injured 11 others due to speeding and reckless driving. Similarly, on January 10, three individuals lost their lives and three more were injured in a road accident along the Enugu-Abakaliki expressway in Ebonyi State.

The toll of these accidents continued to mount throughout the months. An especially tragic incident occurred on January 21 when a fatal road accident on the Kano-Kaduna expressway resulted in the loss of 16 lives and left four individuals with severe injuries. The causes ranged from tyre bursts to speeding and fatigue-induced loss of control.

Subsequent months witnessed further devastation, including a collision on February 20 between a truck and a Mazda bus along the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway that claimed nine lives and injured seven others. Another heart-wrenching incident occurred on March 4th along the Zaria-Kano expressway, where 12 people lost their lives and 28 sustained injuries due to wrongful overtaking, speeding, and overloading.

Expressing concern over the alarming rate of traffic rule violations, officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) stressed the importance of educating motorists and enforcing compliance with regulations. They emphasized the need for drivers to understand the correlation between vehicle speed and braking systems to prevent such tragedies.

Warning that traffic rules violators would face legal sanctions, the FRSC reiterated the imperative of obeying regulations and driving responsibly to avert accidents and safeguard innocent lives. Efforts in public education and enforcement are ongoing to instill a culture of road safety and minimize the occurrence of such devastating accidents in the future.
