the Sultan emphasized the historical and cultural significance of traditional institutions in the country, which predate Nigeria’s independence in 1960.
His comments came in response to former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu’s suggestion that traditional rulers fear governors. The Sultan clarified, “Traditional rulers do not fear governors. We respect them as leaders with constitutional authority, but this respect should not be misunderstood as fear.”
He further stated that traditional institutions have long been guiding and serving the people of Nigeria, even before its creation in 1914. “We have a profound understanding of the country’s history and its people,” he added, stressing that traditional rulers are not afraid to confront challenges, but rely on divine guidance to navigate change.
The Sultan reaffirmed the pivotal role of traditional leaders in advocating for the welfare of their communities and preserving cultural values.
