Vice President Kashim Shettima has commissioned the 33.5-kilometre Elele-Umudioga-Egbeda-Ubimini-Akpabu-Ikiri-Omoku Dual Carriageway in Rivers State.

According to Ireporter Online, the road project was completed under the administration of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and was commissioned on behalf of President Bola Tinubu.

The dual carriageway passes through Ikwerre, Emohua and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Areas, connecting several communities and providing an important link between agricultural, commercial and oil-producing areas and Omoku.

Speaking during the commissioning, Shettima said the project reflected the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda and its focus on expanding infrastructure and economic opportunities beyond major urban centres.

The Vice President said the completed road would improve the movement of farm produce, reduce transportation and logistics costs, create economic opportunities and strengthen access to markets for communities along the corridor.

He described roads as critical infrastructure that connects farmers with markets, workers with jobs, students with schools and patients with healthcare facilities.

Shettima commended Governor Fubara for completing the project and stressed the importance of continuity in governance, noting that successive administrations could build on projects initiated by their predecessors for the benefit of citizens.

“One administration lays a foundation, another strengthens it, and the people remain the final beneficiaries,” he said.

The Vice President also appealed to residents and communities along the route to protect the road and other infrastructure from vandalism and activities that could reduce their lifespan.

Speaking at the event, Governor Fubara expressed optimism that the new road would significantly improve security and economic activities across the affected local government areas.

The governor noted that the poor condition of the route had previously created opportunities for criminal activities, including kidnapping and oil bunkering.

According to Fubara, the improved road network would make it easier for security agencies to access communities and would help reduce criminal activities that had affected residents and businesses in the area.
