Lt. Col. Jonah Unuakhalu, the spokesperson for the task force, announced this in a statement on Monday in Enugu. He highlighted that these actions are part of ongoing clearance operations aimed at ensuring safety and peace in the South-East during the festive season.
Unuakhalu urged well-meaning citizens to continue supporting the joint task force by providing timely, reliable, and credible information. “Remember, security is a shared responsibility and not solely the duty of security agencies. If you see something, say something by calling the JTF Operation UDO KA’s toll-free line at 193 and selecting Option 2 to speak directly to headquarters,” he advised.
In terms of operational details, Unuakhalu explained that troops from Sector 1 conducted an ambush operation on December 21 along the Amouka-Umouka Road in the 9th Mile area of Udi Local Government, aiming to disrupt the activities of kidnappers. During the operation, troops engaged with kidnappers, neutralizing one while others fled, possibly wounded.
The items seized at the site included one AK-47 rifle, two magazines, and 17 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, along with two cell phones, one power bank, three ATM cards, one wristwatch, a set of keys, and 8,900 Naira.
In related news, on December 16, troops from Sector 5 performed a clearance operation in the Mbosi and Isseke areas of Ihiala Local Government, resulting in the elimination of three IPOB members. They recovered an AK-47 rifle, two loaded magazines, and three Dane guns, and subsequently destroyed a residence belonging to one of the group’s commanders, along with a shrine used for their rituals.
Additionally, the spokesperson noted that earlier on December 14, troops arrested three suspected kidnappers in Itungwa, Obingwa Local Government Area, Abia, based on credible information from the public. As the suspects, who were operating a stolen tricycle, attempted to evade capture, they were apprehended at a snap checkpoint.
The recovery from the suspects included one AK-47 rifle, one G3 rifle, a locally made single-barrel pistol, 10 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, 34 rounds of 5.5mm ammunition, two AK-47 magazines, two G3 magazines, and one live cartridge. Other recovered items comprised a mobile phone, 6,600 Naira in cash, and two knapsack bags used for concealing weapons.
