The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode Adebowale, along with a team of global scholars, has emphasized the critical need for mathematical modelling as a key tool in addressing Africa’s growing socio-economic and environmental challenges.

During the opening ceremony of a five-day international conference and advanced workshop on the modelling and simulation of complex systems, held at the University of Ibadan’s Postgraduate College, Professor Adebowale stated that the event was designed to tackle pressing local and global issues. He noted that mathematics, once regarded as a purely theoretical discipline, is evolving into a vital tool with practical societal applications.

According to him, Africa faces numerous difficulties, including inequality in the healthcare system and the consequences of climate change. He argued that mathematical modelling and simulation offer a strategic framework for interpreting and solving these problems due to their analytical depth and predictive capabilities.

The conference brought together leading voices in mathematics and technology with the objective of fostering collaborative research. The Provost of the Postgraduate College, Professor Ayodele Ogunjuyigbe, explained that beyond generating research-based solutions, the initiative is aimed at strengthening the capacity of postgraduate students and early-career scholars in mathematical sciences.

In a conversation with reporters, the Director of the National Mathematical Centre in Abuja, Professor Promise Mebine, remarked that while mathematics holds solutions to critical global issues—from disease control to environmental degradation—many within the country still undervalue its utility in problem-solving.

Echoing this sentiment, Professor Clement Onime of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Italy highlighted a growing global demand for simulations of complex systems. He added that mathematical modelling is now instrumental in reimagining systems such as healthcare and transportation, with data-driven insights driving societal development.

Participants at the conference expressed hope that the outcomes of the workshop would promote the integration of mathematical tools in policymaking and infrastructure development across the continent.
