Ten Nigerian players are set to feature in the 2026/2027 Premier League season, with Frank Onyeka and Taiwo Awoniyi among the first to begin their campaigns.

The Nigerian duo endured a difficult return to the English top flight on Friday night as Coventry City suffered a 3-0 defeat to defending champions Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

Onyeka played a key role in Coventry’s promotion to the Premier League after a 25-year absence, while Awoniyi joined the club only four days before the opening fixture. Their limited preparation time made the clash with Arsenal an especially challenging test.

Meanwhile, Semi Ajayi is also returning to the Premier League after helping Hull City secure promotion. The experienced defender started the club’s play-off final victory over Middlesbrough and played his part in keeping a clean sheet at Wembley.

Ajayi previously made 33 Premier League appearances for West Bromwich Albion during the 2020/21 season and is expected to provide valuable experience as Hull begin their campaign against Manchester United.

David Akintola is another Nigerian who will make his Premier League debut after contributing to Hull City’s promotion. The 30-year-old winger has previously played in Denmark, Norway, Cyprus and Turkey and will now get an opportunity to compete at the highest level in English football.

Brighton teenager Zadok Yohanna is also in line for his first Premier League season. The youngster joined the Seagulls from Swedish club AIK on a five-year contract after registering five goals and four assists in 18 league and cup appearances.

Yohanna has been assigned the number 36 shirt and included in Brighton’s first-team squad as he begins his adaptation to the demands of English top-flight football.

Brentford have likewise included Super Eagles defender Benjamin Fredrick in their Premier League squad after promoting him to the senior team. The centre-back signed a new four-year contract in July, with an option for an additional year, and will wear the number 48 shirt.

Fredrick could make his Premier League debut when Brentford face Tottenham later on Saturday.

Established Nigerian stars Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey and Ola Aina will also continue their Premier League journeys this season.

Iwobi has already made 320 appearances in the competition and recorded four goals and three assists in 27 league appearances last season. The Fulham midfielder also earned his 100th cap for Nigeria in June.

Iwobi and Bassey are expected to feature when Fulham take on Chelsea on Monday, while Bassey remains an important member of the Fulham defence.

Aina, meanwhile, continues to be a key figure for Nottingham Forest. The versatile defender, who recently signed a new contract running until 2028, is capable of operating on either side of the Forest defence.

Chuba Akpom will also return to the Premier League with Ipswich Town after making his loan move from Ajax permanent. The striker signed a contract until 2029 after playing an important role in Ipswich’s promotion campaign last season.

The Nigerian contingent is therefore expected to have a strong presence in the new Premier League season, with several players returning to the competition and others preparing to make their top-flight debuts.
