Police Postpone Sowore’s Invitation Amidst Allegations of Forgery, Inciting Disturbance – ACCORDING TO IREPORTER ONLINE

The Nigeria Police Force has postponed the scheduled invitation of human rights activist and politician, Omoyele Sowore, who was earlier summoned over allegations of forgery and inciting public unrest — ACCORDING TO IREPORTER ONLINE.

Initially set to appear before the Inspector-General of Police Monitoring Unit in Abuja on Monday, Mr. Sowore received notice of the delay via a message from the investigating officer, Hafiz Garba.

The statement cited the unavailability of DCP Akin Fakorede, the head of the unit, who had been assigned to an “urgent national assignment” in the North-East.

“Please be informed that your meeting with DCP Akin Fakorede… has been postponed,” the police message read, confirming that a new date will be communicated.

ACCORDING TO IREPORTER ONLINE, the invitation stemmed from a case reported on July 31, in which Mr. Sowore’s name was allegedly featured prominently.

This development came just days after his involvement in a protest led by retired police officers at Force Headquarters, Abuja, demanding their removal from the Contributory Pension Scheme and better post-service welfare.

Mr. Sowore, who had publicly declared his intention to honour the police summons, denounced the allegations as an attempt to intimidate him.

He further alleged that the police actions were politically motivated, tied to his criticisms of the current Inspector-General of Police, whom he often labels “Illegal IGP.”

In a separate but related matter, Sowore had filed a petition over the alleged theft of his Ray-Ban Meta AI smart glasses, which he claims were stolen during the July 21 protest.

He named the suspected culprit as Aku Victor Chiemere, reportedly a police cameraman affiliated with the Force Public Relations Office. He backed his claim with video footage and repeated online posts between July 23 and 26.

His legal team, led by Tope Temokun, has submitted multiple petitions to various police departments.

Meanwhile, the Presidency and law enforcement agencies have not officially responded to the theft allegation, nor have they commented on the cybercrime charges filed against Sowore in January over his public labeling of the IGP.

As the activist continues to push for further mobilisation in support of retired police officers, ACCORDING TO IREPORTER ONLINE, his supporters are watching closely to see if the police’s next steps reflect a commitment to justice — or further efforts to muzzle dissent.
