Tension High As House Of Reps Committee Demands Immediate Release Of Nnamdi Kanu Or Risk Southeast Unrest

Speaking after the inaugural meeting of the House of Representatives Committee on the South East Development Commission (SEDC) at the National Assembly in Abuja, Kalu praised President Tinubu for his efforts toward promoting peace and development in the South-East. He highlighted Tinubu’s swift approval of the South East Development Commission Bill, which had failed in previous legislative sessions, as a sign of his commitment to the region.

Kalu advocated for a political rather than legal approach to Kanu’s release, emphasizing that such a move would be met with immense gratitude from the South-East people. He expressed confidence that Kanu’s freedom would reduce insecurity in the region and spur development initiatives spearheaded by the SEDC.

“President Tinubu has demonstrated his dedication to the unity of Nigeria by assenting to the South East Development Commission Bill. We believe that releasing Nnamdi Kanu will not only enhance security but also pave the way for growth in sectors like agriculture, infrastructure, and technology,” Kalu stated.

The Deputy Speaker stressed that the ongoing insecurity in the region is partly fueled by Kanu’s continued detention. He argued that releasing him would deprive criminals of an excuse to perpetuate violence, thereby enabling security forces to restore peace.

“We appeal to Mr. President to temper justice with mercy. A political solution to this issue will bring stability and allow the South-East to thrive,” Kalu concluded.

Hon. Chris Nkwonta, Chairman of the House Committee on the South East Development Commission, echoed Kalu’s sentiments, stating that Kanu’s detention has exacerbated tensions and hindered progress in the region. He emphasized that sustainable development could only occur in an environment of peace and inclusivity.

Nkwonta linked the establishment of the SEDC to broader national efforts for Reintegration, Reconstruction, and Reconciliation (RRR) post-civil war. He commended President Tinubu for supporting the commission but stressed that true reconciliation must address historical grievances and political marginalization.

“The South-East is known for its entrepreneurial spirit, but persistent insecurity and underdevelopment remain challenges. Releasing Nnamdi Kanu will reduce unrest and attract investments necessary for the region’s growth,” Nkwonta asserted.

He called on the federal government to prioritize dialogue and reconciliation over prolonged legal battles, urging President Tinubu to demonstrate political will by initiating Kanu’s release.

Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, represented by Deputy Speaker Kalu, officially inaugurated the SEDC Committee, emphasizing its role in addressing the developmental challenges of the South-East. He highlighted the need for infrastructure development, industrial growth, and youth empowerment to unlock the region’s full potential.

“This committee is not just about policy oversight; it is about transforming lives and fostering peace in the South-East,” Abbas stated. He urged committee members to work diligently to ensure the commission achieves its objectives with transparency and accountability.

Senator Ebenezer Ikeyina, representing Anambra Central, also lent his voice to the call for Kanu’s release. He argued that no meaningful development could occur amidst daily insecurity, urging the President to act swiftly to prevent further deterioration of the situation.

Comrade Mark Iheanyi, National Chairman of the Coalition of All Nigeria Support Groups (COANSG), supported the committee’s position, stressing that Kanu’s release is crucial for restoring peace and security in the region.

The collective appeals from lawmakers and stakeholders underscore a growing consensus that resolving Kanu’s detention is key to unlocking the South-East’s developmental potential and fostering national unity.
