After the death of Taizong, Wu became the concubine of his son and successor, Emperor Gaozong, and soon began wielding influence behind the scenes.
Her controversial rise to the throne saw her forcibly remove her son from power, claiming the throne as her own. Despite facing accusations of ruthlessness, including purges and even murders, Wu’s rule was characterized by remarkable efficiency, reshaping Chinese society by shifting power from military officials to scholars and promoting economic growth. Under her reign, China controlled approximately 23% of the global economy—an achievement that continues to astonish historians today.
Empress Wu Zetian’s reign stands as a testament to her extraordinary political acumen and immense wealth, a legacy that remains unmatched in history.
