Doyin Okupe Praises Tinubu’s Address, Highlights Key Government Efforts

In a recent statement, Doyin Okupe, a former spokesperson for the presidency, lauded President Bola Tinubu’s speech regarding the #EndBadGovernance protest, describing it as a beacon of hope for Nigerians. Okupe’s comments underscore the president’s commitment to addressing the country’s economic challenges and instilling confidence in his administration.

On August 4, President Tinubu addressed the ongoing protests against Nigeria’s economic hardships, affirming that he had heard the concerns of the youth “loud and clear.” During his address, Tinubu outlined his government’s plans to tackle the severe economic situation the country faces.

Okupe, who previously served as the director-general of the Labour Party’s presidential campaign council, praised the president for his candid acknowledgment of the nation’s economic plight. He highlighted Tinubu’s recognition of the burdensome debt servicing ratio, which has drastically affected the economy.

“President Bola Tinubu’s speech has not disappointed Nigerians,” Okupe remarked. He noted that the president emphasized the significant efforts made to reduce the debt servicing ratio from 97 percent of earned revenue to 68 percent. This adjustment, Okupe explained, is crucial in alleviating the economic challenges that have been causing widespread suffering.

According to Okupe, the removal of the fuel subsidy was a necessary step to ensure the government’s functionality and prevent excessive borrowing. He also pointed to the increase in minimum wage from N30,000 to N70,000 and substantial investments in infrastructure and agriculture as measures to mitigate the rising cost of living.

Tinubu’s government has initiated temporary measures to address the high cost of living, including the importation of food items and the removal of tariffs on essential goods. Okupe believes these actions are essential for improving the economic situation and supporting Nigerians during this period.

“I personally believe that this administration’s performance compares very favorably, if not better, than many previous administrations,” Okupe stated. He encouraged Nigerians to exercise patience and engage in dialogue, praising Tinubu’s speech for dispelling doubts about his ability to manage the economic turbulence.
